Krems

Lower Austria

Ca. 70 kilometers west of Vienna lies Krems an der Donau, a true jewel of Lower Austria, with just under 25,000 inhabitants, it is also the fifth largest city in the east of the country. Krems is located at the mouth of the Great Krems into the Danube, to the west is the wine-growing region of Wachau, to the east the areas of Wagram and Kamptal. The Krems Valley itself is also one of the most important wine-growing areas in Austria. When the settlement of this corner of Lower Austria began is proven by an important find from 2005, an approximately 27,000 year old child's grave. Equally spectacular was the discovery of a 32,000-year-old female statuette, "Fanny vom Galgenberg", the oldest known work of art in Austria to date. The oldest document with the name Krems dates back to 995. Situated at a strategically important point, Krems experienced an eventful history over the centuries, not infrequently framed by battles. Krems expanded significantly when the neighboring town of Stein was incorporated in 1938. Today, Krems is a university and art city that has a lot to offer visitors. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The churches in Krems and Stein are also worth a visit, as is the town hall or the Powder Tower. Krems has earned a great reputation as a city of culture. The borderline between Krems and Stein is marked by the "Krems Culture Mile", which is actually a mile long. Galleries and museums, not least the spectacular Kunsthalle Krems, show changing exhibitions, especially of contemporary art. Music festivals of various kinds also attract visitors time and again to the city, which from some corners also offers a spectacular view of Göttweig Abbey, perched high on a mountain on the opposite bank of the Danube. Wine is also omnipresent here, as directly behind Krems and in the Krems Valley itself, wine is grown on the best sites. Even the city of Krems has a winery with the winery of the city of Krems itself, but also wineries such as Nigl or the Undhof Salomon enjoy the highest esteem among lovers of great Grüner Veltliner or Riesling. .
