Particularly pleasing for lovers of Mexican cuisine: tacos are becoming increasingly popular in Vienna and more and more restaurants are offering these delicious filled tortillas. Falstaff has compiled an overview of new and old taco restaurants.
Tacos are all the rage at the moment and (literally) on everyone's lips. More and more taco restaurants are popping up in various corners of Vienna – and each one is better than the next. Whether authentic and traditional or modern and creative – the Viennese taco scene has something to suit every taste.
Taquería la Ventana is the latest addition to the Viennese taco scene. However, founder Georg Schmidgruber became famous a few years ago after selling his tacos out of the window during the coronavirus pandemic. Hence the name of the restaurant, as Ventana means window in english. The handmade tacos, which are prepared using traditional Mexican methods and contain high-quality ingredients such as beef from X.O Beef and Wald.Roc organic pork from Höllerschmid, are accompanied by homemade salsas in various degrees of spiciness. The restaurant, which is located at Ferdinandstraße 2/4, 1020, is currently in the soft opening phase.
Also quite new – since the beginning of June – is the Mexican takeaway and bar Don Taco at Neustiftgasse 123 in Vienna's 7th district. In addition to the tacos, with meat from organic farmers in Austria and regional organic vegetables, there is also a cocktail bar with drinks made with tequila or mezcal.
The Comal Mexicano, which reopened in the 4th district in January, will be familiar to many. The owner is María Báez, who also has a restaurant in the 8th district and for whom the location in Florianigasse has probably become too small. Thanks to her loyal fanbase, who can now choose between two locations, the new restaurant is always well frequented. In addition to meat tacos, the restaurant also offers a large selection of vegan tacos.
Tackerei has also moved to a new location. While the pop-up concept previously occupied a stand at Brunnenmarkt, the popular tacos can currently be found at the Olinda Bar in the 5th district. We are curious to see where the restaurateurs will move to next – a permanent location is definitely a wish for the future.
In addition to the new openings, there are also many long-established taco restaurants in Vienna. At the forefront is Maíz at Schönbrunner Straße 32 in the 5th district. Monika Sims has perfected the production of her corn tortillas. They are filled with Mexican specialities – you can choose between beef, pork and veggie tacos – and topped with homemade guacamole or salsa.
Santos offers tacos, burritos and fajitas with fresh ingredients at two locations in the city – in the 4th and 7th districts. Particularly popular are the tacos, which are served in different variations and refined with homemade guacamole or salsa, accompanied by a selection of margarita cocktails and tequilas.
Located at Lange Gasse 12, in the 8th district, the Taquería Los Mexikas offers a selection of classic tacos with fillings such as costilla, barbacoa and suadero, all prepared with traditional ingredients and homemade salsas.
