The best insider tips for Mykonos

Greece
Summer

There are few islands where the celebrations are as lavish as on Mykonos, and few where people are as open and tolerant. But there are also quiet corners.

It is hard to imagine today that the party island of Mykonos was considered an absolute insider tip in the 1950s. And yet the island's history still has an impact on its self-image today. It was the hippies who discovered this untouched spot between the islands of Tinos, Syros and Paros in the 1960s and 1970s.

The picturesque sandy bays attracted the free spirits, who introduced the nude bathing culture to the island. To this day, nudism is tolerated on most beaches, and Mykonos is generally characterised by its open attitude, which is quite different in religious Greece. It is not without reason that the island has established itself as a popular travel destination for the LGBT community.

The island also became famous in the 1960s when it attracted Hollywood celebrities such as Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis, followed by Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren, who enjoyed the hippie and bohemian lifestyle. Even today, the island is a popular summer destination for numerous stars such as Mick Jagger, Justin Bieber, Kate Moss and Gigi Hadid. However, the tranquillity that the first guests appreciated so much is long gone; Mykonos is both popular and notorious as a party island. Can you still find the real Greece here? Many would shake their heads.

The big rush

In the summer months, there are up to 100,000 visitors for every 10,000 inhabitants. Most of them come here to enjoy the luxury; Mykonos is more Ibiza than Mallorca, or at least that's what it wants to be. Expensive champagne, exclusive clubs, but also art galleries and boutiques characterise the image of the capital in the west of the island. However, high-class restaurants and bars are not only to be found here. A special tip is the Spilia (meaning cave) on Kalafatis beach, where freshly caught lobster and oysters are served to guests.

The windmills of Kato Mili, which tower almost majestically over Mykonos Town, are iconic. They date back to the 16th century – only five remain, but these have been lovingly restored and offer a picturesque photo opportunity.

A trading centre

The mills were originally built by the Venetians. They used the island's strong winds to grind flour for rusks, which were intended for sailors. The island's wealth also came from seafaring. It was not very suitable for agriculture due the drought conditions, but instead became an important centre of transit trade in the Aegean.

Once a humble fishing village, Mykonos Town has become a symbol of prestige and proudly preserves its unique architecture. The white cubic buildings, winding cobbled streets, orthodox churches and trendy bars and clubs give Mykonos an enchanting charm.

Mykonos is not only known for its vibrant nightlife scene, this view of the island would probably be too one-dimensional. It is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Aegean. During the day, high society likes to spend time on Psarou Beach near the capital – often on a private yacht. It is known throughout the Mediterranean as a beach for celebrities and Hollywood stars.

Secluded beaches

Paradise Beach is known for its lively party atmosphere. The Cavo Paradise Club is particularly legendary, where renowned DJs from all over the world play on over 3000 square metres. Of course, there are also lounges to relax in. The name of the Super Paradise Beach says it all: in terms of luxury and elegance, it goes one better than its namesake.

Secluded places such as Agios Sostis and Fokos in the north of the island offer more seclusion, while Kalafati Beach in the east attracts sports enthusiasts in particular with its water sports facilities.

For those who want a more tranquil break, a trip to Ano Mera is a good idea. The village, surrounded by small hills, offers a view of authentic island life. You can still find family-run restaurants and tavernas here. You can also visit the monastery of Panagia Tourliani, which was founded in 1542.

Insider tip

A trip (almost) to Italy

If you want to wander off to Italy, at least in your mind, simply stroll through the capital's Little Venice district. It got its name from the houses that are built directly on the water and whose balconies jut out over the water.
