The best insider tips for Crete

Greece
Summer

The largest Greek island is a classic and yet always worth a visit. It offers culture, nature, beautiful beaches – and is famous for its olive oil.

Crete pleases everyone – and that is meant in a very positive way. The largest island is an experienced all-rounder. Bathing enthusiasts, active people, culture vultures and nature lovers will be equally happy on Crete. The island stretches around 250 kilometres from west to east. The north coast is more touristy, the south side less discovered.

Cultural highlights include the Palace of Knossos, a testimony to one of the oldest civilisations in Europe, the Minoans. History buffs can visit the Arkadi Monastery, which was once blown up by its defenders in the fight against the Turks (an adventurous story!), and the Neolithic cave dwellings of Matala. Chania, with its Venetian-influenced old town, is a charming place for a stroll. You will also find a wide range of culinary delights here.

The island's landscape can be experienced on a drive through the hinterland, past the famous olive groves. Lovers describe Cretan oil as the best in the world, and it is certainly the best known. The mountain villages seem to have fallen out of time. Small restaurants exude the Greek way of life. Crete offers a number of culinary specialities. It combines Greek, Turkish and even Minoan influences.

Bathing is also a pleasure; in the lagoon of Elafonisi in the southwest, you could be forgiven for thinking you were on a Caribbean beach. The sand has a subtle pink hue due to the deposits of shells and coral, and the water shimmers turquoise. The Balos Lagoon in the northwest also looks like a South Sea destination, which is best visited by boat.

Insider tip

Snails as a delicacy

You should try the spotted snail. Even the Minoans offered them as an offering to the gods. They later became popular because they were considered neither meat nor fish and could be eaten during Lent. The snails are prepared by dredging them in flour, deep-frying them in olive oil and seasoning them with salt, pepper, rosemary and vinegar.
