Nador – Weingut Garger

Falstaff Wineguide Austria 2022/23

The vineyards that Austrian entrepreneur Rainer Garger cultivates in Hungary are immediately adjacent to those in the Austrian region of Eisenberg in southern Burgenland. Rainer Garger acquired vineyards on the Hungarian side of the Eisenberg, which is called "Vashegy" in Hungarian, almost twenty years ago. In doing so, he followed his own origins, as the family comes from Vaskeresztes, located directly at the foot of Vashegy. A successful introduction to his world of interpretation of Blaufränkisch (Hungarian "Kékfrankos") is the Kékfrankos Falu. "Falu" stands for village, and so this Village wine combines Blaufränkisch grapes from several sites; the wine was aged for 18 months in steel and used wooden barrels and is released after three years. In contrast to the Village wines, which also include a Furmint and a Rosé, the mountain wine selection "Hegy" leaves the storage cellar only after four years. Above them in the pyramid are the three single vineyards, they are called "Stuala", "Voller", "Wanzer", and these elegant red wines are handed over to the customers at the earliest after six years of storage and upon maturity. The name of the winery also has its roots in the area. The neighbouring Pernau Monastery was the social and economic center of the region for centuries since its founding in 1219. The founder of the monastery was Banus Chepan, a scion of an ancient noble family on what is now Hungarian soil. Since the vineyards were once the property of the monastery, a reference to Banus Chepan seemed plausible; he was given the title of "Nador", translated as "royal envoy", for his efforts on behalf of the region. Now the Nador wines are the precious ambassadors of the small but fine wine region with its characterful slate soils.
