La Vinya del Vuit

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

Behind the name of La Vinya del Vuit's only wine, simply called "8", lies one of Spain's great cult wines, which in turn is made by 8 winemaking personalities from the small, exclusive Priorat region, including such illustrious names as Rene Barbier from Clos Mogador and Sara Perez from Clos Martinet. 8 friends met in the fall of 2001 and founded this unique project under the name La Vinya del Vuit. For the wine that this exclusive group has in mind, a small plot of land was found in Gratallops, just 4.5 hectares in size and planted with vines that are around 100 years old. And they are roughly 95% Carinena and 5% Garnacha. The plot is cultivated organically, and the use of machinery is deliberately avoided. All work in the vineyard is carried out by hand with the friendly assistance of mules. There is no special bodega, however, as this exceptional wine is vinified in the famous Clos Mogador winery. There, the wine fermented with natural yeasts is allowed to rest and mature for around 20 months in used 300 litre barrels. The "wine of the eight", because that is exactly what the name "La Vinya del Vuit" means, is already one of the most sought-after wines on the Iberian Peninsula. However, it will only find its way onto a few tables of connoisseurs and fans, as the annual production is just 1,800 bottles.
