Michelin Guide awards first star to ice cream parlor

Ice cream
Best restaurants

Well, the Minimal is not really an ice cream parlor. But it is definitely the first restaurant in the world to win one of the coveted stars with a pure gelato offering.

The new awards in the Guide Michelin Taiwan were unveiled a few days ago. For the first time, a restaurant was awarded a star that impresses with a menu that is unusual even by Michelin standards. The Minimal only serves gelato.

The temperatures of the individual dishes here can easily reach -196 degrees Celsius, and only local products from Taiwan are used. The dessert restaurant was opened by head chef Arwin Wan, who previously worked as a pastry chef at the Sur, which was also awarded a star. His passion for ice cream turned out to be so great that he wanted to dedicate an entire establishment to the dessert.

Why not?

Of course, it's not like an ice cream parlor here. A seven-course tasting menu is on offer, including yuzu and moroheiya ice cream, plum, ashitaba and walnut nitrogen creations and rum and longan flower gelato.

“Fine desserts are à la mode! People are obsessed with delicate desserts, whether desserts or ice cream. They are willing to spend hours indulging in what they love, if only it's good. And Minimal does it well. We boldly decided to award a star – why not?” explains one of the inspectors on the Michelin website.

If you don't want to eat there, you can also order the ice cream as a chic take-away.
