Heinz has caused a storm of indignation in Italy with his canned spaghetti carbonara.

The US food giant Heinz causes a stir every now and then – and this time it has enraged the Italians. The company, known for its ketchup products and canned food, recently introduced a new ready meal: Canned Spaghetti Carbonara. With a 400-gram can advertised as rich and creamy, Heinz has not only hit the Italian palate, but also the national self-image.

An attack on national identity?

Reactions to the new product from Heinz have been overwhelmingly negative in Italy. Alessandro Pipero, owner of the renowned Michelin-starred restaurant Pipero Roma in Rome and a respected carbonara expert, even compared the product to cat food in the British Times. The idea of offering such an iconic dish as carbonara in a can is seen by many Italians as an affront to their culinary tradition. There is also a huge outcry on social media: Italian gourmets and chefs are outraged and accuse Heinz of desecrating Italian cuisine.
