Falstaff Wine Guide Austria 2023/24

Marjan Simčič Winery is one of the most famous and prominent wineries in Slovenia. Marjan Simčič, the owner and winemaker, represents the fifth generation of his family, which has owned the winery since 1860. The winery is located on the Slovenian-Italian border, overlooking the Collio. It has 14 hectares of vineyards on the Slovenian side and 10 hectares on the Italian side. The vineyards are located on the steep slopes of the Brda River, where the warm Mediterranean climate meets the cool night breezes of the Julian Alps. This unique climate allows for the cultivation of high quality organic grapes on the typical Opoka soils, a mineral rich mixture of marl and sandstone. This terroir is tailor-made for the production of a variety of elegant wines with a distinct mineral character and freshness. Sustainability has been part of the family's way of life from the beginning, and so most of the work is still done by hand and according to strict sustainable protocols. While organic grapes are produced, traditional winemaking methods are adhered to in the cellar. The Marjan Simčič winery produces mainly single varietal wines, getting the best out of organic grapes that are carefully harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, with lower than average yields. The results are elegant and complex wines with a distinct terroir signature, a touch of minerality and just the right amount of freshness. Their prestigious line, named after the terroir soil OPOKA, is appreciated all over the world.
