Familia Nin-Ortiz

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

Ester Nin has had an amazing career in Spanish viticulture. Born in Penedes, she first studied biology and viticulture with a special focus on ecological and biodynamic aspects. She then gained her first experience as an oenologist at Clos Erasmus, the cult and legendary winery in Priorat. She fell in love with this barren and rugged region, which has such great certain ageing potential for top-quality wines. In 2004, she bought some particularly privileged parcels and her first wine, the "Nit de Nin", was already awarded 98 out of 100 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. She then met her husband Carles Ortiz, who also owns precious parcels of land, and nothing stood in the way of them founding a winery together. The vineyards of the Familia Nin-Ortiz stand at around 700 meters, making them some of the highest in the Priorat. These parcels are so steep that they can only be worked by hand or with the help of mules. The fact that ecological and organic criteria are clearly in the foreground when it comes to cultivation is a result of Ester Nin's history. Today, the family is a member of Nicolas Joly's "Jolys La Renaissance des Apellations". The family does not shy away from experimentation either, so the wines are sometimes vinified and bottled without the addition of sulphur, or sometimes stored or matured in amphorae. However, critics always agree that the family's wines are unique, extremely full of character and original. The logical consequence is that top marks are the order of the day.
