Bartolo Mascarello

Falstaff Wine Guide Italy 2024

He was considered to be the last of the Mohicans; for him, barrels and short maceration periods were the end of Barolo. The same applied to single-vineyard wines. Bartolo Mascarello was convinced that only the blending of several vineyards could give the wine complexity. He died in 2005. He was succeeded by his daughter Maria Teresa. Following her father's example, she is also very determined. Small wooden barrels and single-vineyard wines are not an issue for her. She continues to produce a single Barolo from the Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Ruè in Barolo and Rocche in La Morra vineyards. But it is world class!
