Valsangiacomo Vini

Falstaff Wineguide Switzerland 2023/24

The year was 1831, when Giovanni Valsangiacomo started trading wine in Chiasso and laid the foundations for the Valsangiacomo winery. 192 years later, the Mendrisio-based company, now managed by Uberto, the sixth generation of the Valsangiacomo family, is still an important reference in the Ticino wine industry. In fact, Valsangiacomo is one of the few family businesses in the canton of Ticino that handles all phases of wine production itself. Its own vineyards in Mendrisiotto provide the grapes, which are vinified under natural conditions in the historic winery of Mendrisio, dug directly into the rock of Monte Generoso. Here the wines are cared for, refined and bottled under optimal conditions. "Sustainable and environmentally friendly production is a key aspect both in the vineyard and in the winery," explains Uberto Valsangiacomo, an agricultural engineer at ETHZ. "We want our wines to reflect the qualitative ageing potential of the Merlot grapes in the best possible way. Certainly, experience and knowledge passed down from generation to generation are also partly responsible for this qualitative advantage." His passion but also the curiosity and interest in new production techniques, have allowed Valsangiacomo to produce wines with a strong personality, always in tune with the spirit of the times. The winery's website www.valswine.ch will soon tell their story.
