Fongaro Spumanti Metodo Classico

Falstaff Wine Guide Italy 2022/23

The Fongaro Winery was born in 1975 from the passion and commitment of its founder, Guerrino Fongaro. Since the beginning the founder’s strongly believed in the cultivation of an autochthonous Veronese grape variety: Durella. The name of the grape also gives the name to the type of wine developed: Durella the grape, Durello the wine. The Durella is one of the oldest and most typical vines of the Lessini Mountains, area where the company stands. The winery is located in Roncà (province of Verona) and is part of the Lessinia Natural Park. In 1985 the Fongaro Winery decided to focus its activity on the exclusive production of Classic Method Sparkling Wines. The use of this grape variety (Durella) with particular characteristics, enhanced in the sparkling process, and the long skilled experience made it possible today to offer a unique and unmistakable product in the panorama of Classic Method Sparkling Wines. An added value to our Spumante was the advance of the times’ choice, since 1985, to embrace the principles of organic agriculture, becoming one of the first organic winery in the Veneto region. This style of production once again underlines the respect and love for the land, and also guarantees high standards of the product’s quality. To date, the management of the company has passed into the hands of Tanita Danese, a young agriculturist and oenologist who has long been linked to the Fongaro family. With her skills and experience, she is expanding the vision of the winery, inextricably linking tradition and innovation. Durella is a unique variety with a strong, natural fixed acidity, destined ideally for sparkling wine. Our wines remain with the lees in the cellar for a total of 44 to 108 months, most vintages being D.O.C. and RISERVA. We're located in the Lessini Mountains between Verona and Vicenza, in the Veneto region. We are less than one hour by car from Venice or Lake Garda, and less than half hour from the Arena of Verona. It is here that we keep our traditions alive with the native variety of Durella grape. Today, our wines are still the result of purely manual work: every bottle is touched, picked up and moved by human hands at least 40 times before leaving the cellar. We produce D.O.C.-certified organic wines with a traditional spirit.
