Domaine Zind Humbrecht

Falstaff Online 2022

There is no getting around the name Zind-Humbrecht and the wines associated with it in Alsace. But what would have happened if founder Leonhard Humbrecht had not met his future wife Geneviève in the 1950s at his farewell party, organized on the occasion of his departure as an aid worker to Nigeria. Instead, today's flagship domain was founded from the merger of the Zénon Humbrecht and Emile Zind wineries. Subsequently, Leonhard Humbrecht developed a unique understanding of the terroir and sites of Alsace, helping even little-noticed sites such as Thann to fame and glory. Since the 1990s, he has been assisted by his son Olivier, now a Master of Wine. Together they developed a concept for the conversion to biodynamic viticulture, and today the entire 50 hectares owned by the family, spread over five municipalities, have been completely converted - and Oliver Humbrecht is considered one of the terroir specialists and connoisseurs of the region. The separation between vineyard manager and cellar master does not apply here, because if you want to do everything right in the cellar, then "you also have to know a lot about the grapes," according to their credo. The wines prove them right; they are among the best in the region, and even among the best in the country.
