There is hardly a region in the world where you can find such high-class and famous names in such a small space as in Pomerol. With the cult Chateau Pétrus behind you, you are only a few meters away from Château Lafleur and another legend of the region. Founded by Henri Greloud in 1872, today the great-great-grandson Baptiste Guinaudeau and his wife Julie run the small and exclusive château in the fourth generation.
However, their predecessors were already able to record great successes, because the 1947 vintage, for example, is mentioned in the same breath as a legend like Château Cheval Blanc and is one of the most sought-after wines among enthusiasts and collectors.
Nevertheless, despite its fame, the Château has retained the charm of a family business to this day. With 4.5 hectares, Château Lafleur is what one would call a boutique winery. For this, the vines stand on the gifted terroir of Pomerol, that mixture of clay, mixed in some places with sand or pebbles. This soil is rich in iron, which is reflected in the wine in an unusual intensity and depth.
Unlike many other châteaux in Pomerol, they have preserved ancestral principles. These include the cuvée of 50 percent Cabernet Franc and 50 percent Merlot, which is unusual for the region. And something else distinguishes the château from others: here there is not a complete reliance on the effect of new wood; new barriques are only used to about 75 percent. The quality philosophy is also consistent, because in less good years, no Château Lafleur is brought to market; at best the second wine "Pensées de Lafleur".
It goes without saying that with the desirability of Château Lafleur, of which only about 12,000 bottles are produced, the procurement situation is difficult.
